Although there have been improvements in recent years, completeness of civil registration remains low. According to current program monitoring reports 9.4% of births and 9.0% of deaths in the country are captured though the civil registration system that is managed by the Tanzania Registration Insolvency and Trusteeship Agency (RITA). With the data that are available, RITA has developed vital statistics reports and have shared these with the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the national agency assigned the mandate to publish and disseminate vital statistics. However, to date, the NBS has not published these reports. In Phase 5, the DI team will work closely with the CRVS Program and provide RITA and NBS support that helps accelerate progress towards the production, publication and dissemination of vital statistics in the country. Support from DIP will include training NBS, RITA and the MOH on vital statistics production and working with these partners to develop national standard operating procedures on vital statistics dissemination and communication. We will also engage government leadership in the CRVS sector and relevant sectors (e.g., health, education, social services) and stakeholders from local research institutions to discuss progress on producing vital statistics, reflect on policy stakeholders’ experiences of using vital statistics, prioritize policy-related evidence needs, and plan how to address evidence needs through multi-sectoral collaboration and use of data available from the CRVS system and other sources (e.g., the 2022 census. Demographic and Health Surveys). Doing so will help advance the goal of establishing a culture of data use and evidence-based policy decision-making in Tanzania
